Caterpillar just unveiled its new GSH420 and GSH520 orange-peel grapples, which are ideally suited to a variety of construction, demolition, and recycling applications.

    Out With The Old

Increasingly, new environmental regulations and shrinking budgets are putting significant pressure on organizations to get more out of their material handlers and associated attachments. Cat’s new GSH420 and GSH520 grapples will be replacing the GSH15B series grapples, due to their superior performance and ability to separate mixed materials for recycling more efficiently.

    Better Design, Top To Bottom

The GSH420 and GSH520 are available in four- and five-tine shell configurations and in closed or semi-open versions. Cat designed them to attach to its MH3022, MH3024, and MH3026 material handlers. The new grapples feature cylinders oriented horizontally, which results in better material penetration, efficient bulk-material handling, and improved strength and durability. The grapples’ redesigned rotation system features a new swivel designed to increase return-flow capacity by 160% and open-flow capacity by 30%. These improvements dramatically reduce hydraulic restriction, resulting in faster cycles and more efficient fuel consumption.

The grapples are constructed of high-grade, impact-resistant steel, and Cat designed their structure to protect the hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and other sensitive components. Every pivot point on the new grapples features high-quality bushings with lubrication grooves and hardened pins. Wear-resistant replaceable cast tips are also fitted to the ends of the tines to ensure these grapples continue to serve your needs for years to come. Other features that contribute to a long, reliable lifespan include a solid hinge-point construction, robust end-stops, and solid-pin mounting brackets. For those looking to expand the grapple’s utility, there’s a standard lifting eye on the bottom of the housing for mounting an optional magnet.
