Gentleman Jim — “Jimmy” The Million Dollar Mule It gives me great pleasure to present to you a mule who is worth his weight in gold—Gentleman Jim, affectionately known as “Jimmy.” This handsome mule is 18 years old, sound, dependable, and experienced. He can be trusted to ride quietly for kids and for those of us who simply can’t afford to hit the ground! Ol’ Jimmy is a real treasure and an absolute pleasure to trail ride. He is the kind of mule that comes along only once in a lifetime, and he lives true to his name—a gentleman in every way. Jimmy has been with me for the past seven years, making me his third owner. His two previous owners are both lovely ladies who remain part of Jimmy’s little fan club. I still send them pictures of him from time to time. It isn’t every day that you find a horse or mule for sale who has a lifelong fan club—people who already know firsthand the joy of having Jimmy in their barn. Jimmy only had one job on my farm: I trusted him to take care of my Mom. When my Mom went trail riding with her friends, Jimmy was her partner. Over the past seven years, he proved time and time again that he was worth far more than his weight in gold. Here are some typical riding scenarios from Jimmy’s life: • Trailering out for the day: Mom and Jimmy would be picked up by a friend and their horse, and together they would leave in the truck and trailer for a day of trail riding at our local horse park—many times not returning home until after dark. • Riding with a group: Mom and her friends would haul their horses to our farm and ride together along the Sangamon River. Sometimes a dog would accompany the group. Jimmy was completely unfazed by the mixed company. • Riding alone: Jimmy is solid when riding by himself, too. This is where he earned his nickname, “The Million Dollar Mule.” Jimmy takes such good care of his rider. Riding alone always carries some risk, but I never worried the way I might have with another horse or mule. I knew Mom was riding her million dollar mule, Gentleman Jim. • Teaching kids: Jimmy has taught several children how to ride and helped build their confidence. We have also used him as a fill-in for our small riding lesson program. Why Is This Million Dollar Mule For Sale? My Mom passed away this past June. It took several months for my mind and my heart to align and for me to realize that I needed to allow Jimmy to move on. It would be selfish for me to hang onto him and waste all that he has to offer someone else. Love is not about possession. It’s about wanting what is best for the one you love. Jimmy deserves a person who will appreciate him, enjoy him, and give him a job. I want to find the person who will recognize what I have known for the past seven years: Jimmy is something special. The Good Stuff — Jimmy’s Highlights • Traffic Tolerant • Neck reins easily • Rides alone or with a group • Loads and unloads easily in the trailer • Bottom of the herd pecking order • Stands politely for the farrier • Stays sound barefoot • Loves water • Rides double • Stands tied • Easy to catch in a large pasture • Loves having his ears rubbed • Enjoys people • Accepts breeching or tail croupier • Kid friendly • Leads anywhere easily • Rides in a hackamore or other bitless bridle • Easy keeper • Doesn’t bray often • Does not bother the barn cats in his pasture • Stands quietly to be tacked up and mounted • Has an excellent “whoa” • Does not kick or bite • Experienced and dependable trail mule A Couple Things You Should Know About Jimmy Jimmy does not like needles. For routine vaccinations or blood draws, I recommend using mild pressure with a lip twitch to keep the process low-stress for everyone involved. Otherwise, the “donkey” side of Jimmy makes an appearance. He will turn his head slightly away from you and simply walk off. Before long, you may find yourself dirt-skiing behind him until he decides he has successfully lost the veterinarian! Jimmy also has a history of developing colic when fed grain or pelleted feed consistently over an extended period. For that reason, his recommended diet is simple: hay and/or pasture grass. This has worked well for him and is an important part of responsible ownership of Jimmy. Jimmy isn’t perfect—and I’m not going to pretend he is. But after seven years together, I know this mule well enough to tell you both the good and the things you need to know. And the good is pretty darn special. Gentleman Jim isn’t just a mule I am selling. He is a mule I am trusting someone else to love. I hope his next person understands just how lucky they are to have him.
