John Deere Presents New Rotary Cutter Family

Deere & Company recently announced a new John Deere Rotary Cutter family that includes seven models categorized into the E, M, and R Series. Available in cutting widths ranging from 10 to 20 feet (3.05 meters to 6.1 meters), the new cutters replace the company’s existing MX, HX, and CX Flex-Wing Rotary Cutter lineup. Deere plans to display the new models, which feature an all-new deck and cutting chamber design, at various farm shows this fall.

    Making The Cut

In addition to E-Series and R-Series models, John Deere’s new Rotary Cutter family includes the M Series, which includes the M15 and M20 models. The M-20 (pictured above) offers a 20-foot cutting width, a 100-horsepower gearbox, and a Category 5 driveline. (Photo courtesy of Deere & Company.)

Deere says the new mowers are designed for use by ag producers, commercial operators, municipal contractors, and others in grass, pasture, CRP land, roadside, park, crop stalk, large commercial lot, and other mowing applications. They include the E Series’ E12 (12-foot/3.7-meter cutting width) and E15 (15-foot/4.6-meter), the M Series’ M15 (15-foot) and M20 (20-foot), and the high-end R Series’ R10 (10-foot), R15 (15-foot), and R20 (20-foot) models.

A new deck and cutting chamber is the foundation for all three model designations. Cristina Guzman, Deere marketing representative, says Deere designed the cutting chamber from the ground up to control airflow under the deck, thereby enhancing cutting performance and cut-material distribution while reducing material accumulation on the deck’s top. Guzman also says the chamber improves cut quality at higher ground speeds.

    Added Stability

The high-end R Series includes the R15 (shown here), the R10, and the R20 models. All three include a new 125-horsepower gearbox and Category 6 main driveline. (Photo courtesy of Deere & Company.)

All seven models offer 1- to 16-inch (25- to 406-mm) cutting heights and use a new suspended front mount designed to enhance machine stability by isolating cutter deck movement “relative to the tractor and vice versa.” A new torsional rear suspension system available as an option on the M-Series models and standard on R-Series models adds additional stability. Deere notes the technology is the same that its windrowers have used for 10-plus years.

The E-Series models include a 75-horsepower gearbox and Category 4 driveline; M-Series models come standard with a 100-horsepower gearbox and Category 5 driveline and offer an optional 125-horsepower gearbox with Category 6 driveline. The R-Series models include a new 125-horsepower gearbox and Category 6 main driveline for greater capacity and improved durability and performance.
