With numerous nods to comfort and productivity, John Deere recently introduced six new 2019 models of M Series and R Series commercial walk-behind mowers for professional landscaping applications. Along with the company’s existing 2018 models, John Deere now offers 17 commercial walk-behind mowers ranging from 14.5 to 25 horsepower, with deck sizes running from 32 to 61 inches (91 to 155 centimeters). Deere also manufacturers ZTrak zero-turn mowers, QuikTrak stand-on mowers, 1500 Series front mowers, and 1600 Series wide-area mowers.

    Get A Grip

In a statement, Carl Agee, John Deere product marketing manager, said Deere specifically set out to learn what daily challenges customers were experiencing in terms of productivity and comfort where using walk-behind mowers were concerned. With the new M and R Series models, he said, Deere focused on enhancing grip comfort with new steering controls, increasing operator leverage and machine maneuverability with new ergonomic handles, and improving ground clearance for curb-climbing applications.

Deere, in fact, completely redesigned the new mowers’ controls to maximize operator comfort. The redesign offers improved hand position, Deere says, while the mowers’ control grips feature recessed operator-presence levers billed as providing a smooth contour during mowing tasks. Overall, these changes and others “reduce operator effort and minimize operator fatigue” after a full day of mowing, Deere says.

    Demanding Conditions & Strenuous Applications

New models in the M Series with recoil starting include the W36M (36-inch, or 91-centimeter, deck) and W48M (48-inch, 122-centimeter deck). Both offer 14.5 horsepower, travel up to 6.5 mph (10.5 km/h), and provide 4 inches (10 centimeters) of ground clearance.

The electric-starter R Series mowers, meanwhile, include the 14.5-horsepower W36R (36-inch, 91-centimeter deck), the 18.5-horsepower W48R (48-inch, 122-centimeter deck), the 18.5-horsepower W52R (52-inch, 132-centimeter deck), and the 25-horsepower W61R (61-inch, 155-centimeter deck). The new R Series models offer up to 7.5 mph (12 km/h) ground speed and 8.5 inches (21.6 centimeters) of ground clearance and are aimed at “demanding conditions and strenuous applications.”
