John Deere’s new 850L crawler dozer is the successor to its popular 850K line. The 23.8- to 25.7-ton (21.5- to 23.3-metric-ton) machine has a heavier operating weight, one of several updates inspired by customer feedback.

The 850L also features a new operator station, several reliability and durability upgrades, and a stronger motor. For its class, Deere claims, the new dozer has the most horsepower and widest PAT (power angle tilt blade) at 172 inches (4.4 meters).

“Our K-Series dozers are a favorite with customers, and thanks to their ongoing feedback, the next generation of Deere dozers are our strongest, most durable and productive yet,” says Nathan Horstman, John Deere Construction & Forestry crawler product marketing manager.

    Power & Control

The 850L’s new 9-liter JD engine produces 225 horsepower (168 kilowatts), or about 10% more power than the 850K series. The Tier 4 Final/Stage IV-compliant motor has an economy mode, auto idle, and auto shutdown features. The system’s upgraded cooling system has wider-spaced fins and full accessibility on both sides.

Deere also gave the 850L a new operator station with 15% more interior space and a 27% lower noise level. The HVAC airflow is improved by a new motor, and automatic temperature control is optional. The optionally heated and ventilated seat is now angled to make it easier to view operations in the rear of the machine. An optional rear camera helps here, too.

The dozer also features new ergonomic joysticks. The new transmission stick has a rocker switch for forward, neutral, and reverse travel positions. The new hydraulic joystick, meanwhile, comes with a thumb roller control for adjustment of the blade angle and power pitch. Other buttons address grade control, return to pitch, and blade shake, as available. The machine’s EH (electrohydraulic) valves support John Deere SmartGrade, Topcon, Leica, and Trimble grade control systems.

    A Stronger Crawler

To handle the power of the bigger motor, and the demands of the work, Deere made the 850L’s mainframe up to 60% thicker in key areas. Its electrical and hydraulic routing has been improved for durability’s sake. The machine is easier to service when necessary, thanks to a 65-degree tilt cab.

The dozer’s dual-path hydrostatic transmission comes with 13% larger pumps than the 850K. The eight-roller dozer features a direct drive, double reduction final drive and has a 130-inch (3.3-meter) track footprint.

    850L Variants

John Deere makes the 850L in Dubuque, Iowa. Configurations are available for forestry, pipelaying, waste handling, and mechanical angle blade applications.

“The 850L combines muscle, efficiency, and balance for impressive new levels of performance,” says Horstman. “Coupled with an extraordinary focus on reliability and uptime, you have the winning combination our customers are asking for.”
