Liebherr TA 230 Litronic Articulated Dump Truck Makes First North American Appearance
Liebherr announced its TA 230 Litronic articulated dump truck to North America last year, and finally showed off the all-terrain, off-highway model for the first time last week at the ConExpo-Con/Agg 2023 convention. The company says it redeveloped the eighth-generation truck to stand up to the most challenging off-road hauling applications. The 355-horsepower (265-kilowatt) machine is also well-suited for larger infrastructure projects and specialty jobs like tunnel construction.
A New Design
Liebherr made several updates to the TA 230 designed to improve loading and unloading speed and transport safety. The dump bed has a straight front end and sides designed for easier loading across the bed’s entire width. An onboard weighing system displays the current payload on an in-cab display, and two loading lights at the back of the external cab give operators a clear view of the load level, even in low light. Liebherr also tapered the dump body’s inner edges to make material unloading smoother, and a long chute at the dump bed’s rear helps minimize material loss. Customers that haul and dump large, bulky material can add an optional, wide-opening tailgate.
The truck is equipped with hill start assist, speed assist, and speed-dependent steering. Liebherr also built in a hard stop feature that lets the operator push a button to activate and deactivate end position damping of the dump bed lifting cylinders. In addition, dump bed lift is also limited when working in a height-critical area.
Excellent Visibility
Large panoramic windows, no obstructing struts, a short and inclined hood, and a rearview camera all combine to give drivers an excellent view of the truck’s surroundings. The truck’s new visibility- and safety-enhancing lighting concept includes dipped-beam headlamps with built-in high beams. Extra powerful LED headlights can also be added at the front to light up the entire work area. Rear body lights and a light package at the mudguards help enhance nighttime visibility, and an optional LED access light makes entering and exiting the cab safer.
Powertrain
The TA 230 is powered by a Tier 4 Final-compliant six-cylinder, 12-liter engine. Liebherr says operators can count on the truck’s automatic eight-speed powershift transmission to deliver optimal force distribution and its actively controlled longitudinal differential locks to provide automatic traction control. The truck can haul 30.9 tons (28 metric tons) per load, and it has a maximum dump body capacity of 23.67 cubic yards (18 cu meters). The truck’s top speed is 35.4 mph (57 km/h).
