Bobcat recently announced the addition of the new 4.59-ton (4.16-metric-ton) E40 minimal-tailswing mini excavator to its 3- to 5-t (2.7- to 4.5-mt) compact digger lineup. The manufacturer will preview the 40-horsepower (30-kilowatt) E40 at the Equip Exposition taking place October 17 to 20 in Louisville, Kentucky. Bobcat also announced a series of revised model names for the other excavators in that segment that the manufacturer says better reflect their size and performance within the industry.

    New Excavator Model Names

Bobcat’s 3- to 5-t mini excavator offerings now include the E32, E35, E38, E40, E48, and E55. The company renamed the 33-HP (24.6-kW) configuration of the E35 to the E38. The 25-HP (18.6-kW) version of that model retains its E35 designation. In addition, the E42 is now the E48 and the E50 is now the E55.

“Our compact excavator lineup within the 3-to-5-ton size class has grown, and the updated model numbers better reflect the outstanding performance capabilities that empower our customers to accomplish more each and every day,” says Bobcat Director of Product Development Mike Wetzel. “The updated portfolio more closely aligns with the excavators’ capabilities when compared to other machines within the same size class.”

    E40 Advantages

Thanks to its less than 2 inches (5 centimeters) of overhang, the E40 is at home working in confined areas or against obstacles. The excavator also easily handles slewing and depositing soil with less repositioning to avoid surrounding objects, says Bobcat.

Bobcat's E48 (formerly the E42) has an operating weight of 9,830 pounds and a maximum ground reach at ground level of 207.1 inches. (Photo courtesy of Bobcat.)

Bobcat says operators will detect a performance advantage when backfilling trenches or slewing a loaded bucket uphill due to the E40’s turbocharged Bobcat diesel engine (which meets Tier 4 regulations without a diesel particulate filter), carefully tuned hydraulics, and durable slew bearing. The excavator’s lift capacity also ranks among the best in its class, the company says.

    E40 Specifications

The E40 has a maximum reach at ground level of 215.2 in. (546.6 cm) and a 146.8-in. (372.9-cm) maximum dump height. Bobcat says the included long arm adds 12 in. (30.5 cm) of additional digging depth and reach. The excavator’s rated lift capacity is 3,939 pounds (1,786 kilograms), and its bucket digging force is 7,284 pounds-force (32.4 kilonewtons).

The E40 is equipped with low-effort joysticks, LED lighting, and an integrated lift eye. Bobcat says its greater window surface area, improved roof window, and narrower side pillars add up to excellent work site visibility. Comfort and a smoother ride are also on tap due to redesigned floor pedals that fold away, a suspension seat, and a dual-flange track roller system.
