Brinkman Plumbing Contractors in Quincy, Illinois, recently became the first North American customer to receive a new Case CX15EV battery-electric mini excavator in the 1.65-ton (1.5-metric-ton) class. Acquired from Case dealer Luby Equipment, the 3,130-pound (1,420-kilogram), lithium-ion-powered excavator delivers the same working performance as a diesel machine, Case says, but with zero on-site emissions and low noise levels. The CX15EV has a 4- to 8-hour run time, and it can be recharged from 0 to 100% in as little as 90 minutes with an optional offboard fast charger.

    Quiet & Fume-Free

The Case CX15EV’s 102-volt battery powers a 16-kilowatt (21-horsepower) internal permanent magnet motor. The machine’s external sound power rating is a mere 82 dBA, and its undercarriage can be retracted from 3.4 to 2.6 feet (1.03 to 0.79 meters) in width, making the zero-emissions excavator a natural choice for indoor work.

“Luby Equipment knew we needed a solution that would fit through a 36-inch doorway and recommended the Case CX15EV,” says owner Jim Brinkman. “I think we were more excited about this little machine than we’ve been with any other piece of equipment. This excavator is going to make us more competitive and will save us a lot of headache, time, and backache on indoor jobs.”

The relatively quiet CX15EV facilitates communication on the jobsite, while its compact dimensions and 30-degree gradeability make it easy to transport. The lack of a diesel engine reduces the number of daily checks and amount of maintenance that must be performed, and of course, eliminates dangerous fumes from the combustion of fossil fuels.

“This machine comes with a lot of advantages,” says Brinkman. “It’s safer for our guys and it’s more productive. It’s a win all the way.”

    Case CX15EV Specifications

The Case CX15EV has adjustable electrohydraulic proportional controls. Its boom can swing 60 degrees to the left and 70 degrees to the right. The compact excavator’s maximum dig depth is 6.7 ft (2 m) with its standard arm, and 8.9 ft (2.7 m) with its long arm option. Case lists its bucket digging force as 2,600 pounds-force (11.57 kilonewtons). With its standard onboard charger, the CX15EV can be fully recharged from 0 to 100% in 14 hours by a common 120-volt outlet.

The electric excavator’s rubber belt tracks exert only 4.6 pounds per square inch (0.32 kilograms per square centimeter) of ground pressure, powered by a hydrostatic drive system. The 2-speed travel drive has a maximum speed of 2.4 mph (3.8 km/h) and automatically upshifts or downshifts according to the load.

Standard features on the Case CX15EV include a dozer blade, auxiliary hydraulics, and a tiltable rollover protection system (ROPS). Its options include a second auxiliary circuit compatible with augers, hydraulic hammers, and more. The operator can set and save flow settings for easy switching among attachments. Other options include a long arm, a falling object protection system (FOPS) Level 1 canopy, a mechanical quick coupler, digging buckets, and more.

More Electric Machinery Coming From Case

“Electrified construction equipment has a bright future everywhere,” says Terry Dolan, vice president, North America, Case Construction Equipment. “With our EV models, we’ve taken the same approach as we have with every other Case machine since 1842—listen to contractors’ needs and create solutions that help them get work done easier and more profitably than ever before.”

Case plans to bring a larger CX25EV electric mini excavator and an electrified small articulated loader to market in 2024.
