Upgraded Volvo L110H & L120H Wheel Loaders Have New Engine, Simpler Ignition & Onboard Weighing
Volvo Construction Equipment has refreshed its midsize L110H and L120H wheel loaders with a new Volvo D8M engine, a larger Co-Pilot tablet, and other wish list features. The 19.8-ton (18-metric-ton) L110H and 23-t (20.8-mt) L120H wheel loader’s new systems are designed to improve machine uptime and enhance productivity and convenience for operators and technicians alike. The updated models will be available this summer.
“I think every owner and operator will notice and appreciate the upgraded performance and efficiency,” says Chris Connolly, Volvo CE product manager for midsize wheel loaders. “They are popular models for a reason, and now they’re even better.”
No More Parking For Regeneration
The new engine installed in the updated wheel loaders is a Volvo D8M 8-liter diesel. It produces 256 horsepower (191 kilowatts) in the L110H and 272 HP (203 kW) for the L120H. The improved exhaust aftertreatment system automatically regenerates during operation, like it does in Volvo’s larger wheel loaders, and is much easier to maintain. Other upgrades include an electric pump for priming the fuel system and new captive fuel filters with good water separation and extended service intervals of 1,000 hours.
Simpler, Safer Ignition
Volvo gave the new L110H and L120H wheel loaders a new ignition strategy, which the company originally designed for its articulated haul vehicles. The operator can now power up the machine using only the ignition key without first turning on the main switch at ground level. This feature also prevents inadvertent battery drain if the operator forgets to turn off the main switch at the end of a shift. The battery disconnect switch is now easier to lock in the off position for lockout-tagout (LOTO) safety protocol before service or maintenance.
A New Co-Pilot
The L110H and L120H are Volvo’s first midsize wheel loaders to come with a standard onboard weighing system and the larger, next-generation Co-Pilot tablet with a higher-resolution 12-inch display. In addition to the onboard scale, the tablet’s Load Assist applications include tire pressure monitoring, hands-free calling and audio controls, and efficiency tips for the operator.
The Co-Pilot displays video from the machine’s high-definition cameras. It also emits safety alarms from the radar and collision mitigation systems when the loader gets too close to a person or obstacle. Users can customize the apps and settings on the Co-Pilot’s home screen.
Volvo L110H & L120H Specifications
The L110H wheel loader has an operating weight of 39,680 to 45,635 pounds (18,000 to 20,700 kilograms) and a full-turn static tipping load rating of 24,720 lbs (11,200 kg). The L120H model weighs 45,635 to 47,620 lbs (20,700 to 21,600 kg) and is rated for a 27,120-lb (12,300-kg) tipping load at full turn.
Volvo’s OptiShift transmission comes standard with both machines. OptiShift combines Volvo’s exclusive Reverse By Braking function with an adjustable engagement strategy for the locking torque converter. Reverse By Braking saves fuel and drivetrain wear by applying the service brakes and cutting engine speed when the operator changes direction.
The L110H and L120H use torque parallel linkage and are compatible with bucket sizes from 3.2 to 12.4 square yards (2.4 to 9.5 square meters). Volvo will continue to build the new wheel loaders at its North American headquarters in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
