“Inventory levels are climbing across the board,” says Helman. “We're seeing steeper increases amongst the excavator and wheel loader segments. Dozers and off-highway trucks are right below that, but they are starting to incline. Over the next several months, we anticipate that just because of where pre-pandemic inventory levels were compared to where we're sitting right now, we're going to continue to see a steep incline.”

“Why is that important?” Helman continues, “If you look at the Auction EVI [Equipment Value Index] Trend section on the right, auction pricing always directly reflects inventory levels. So, if inventory levels are climbing, we’re going to see an impact on auction pricing—typically falling. That's what we're starting to see. Although it looks minimal, pricing is starting to soften and will continue to soften as these inventory levels continue to climb. So, if you have equipment to sell, now is a better time to sell compared to waiting quarter after quarter, because we don't see this inventory-value trend stopping anytime soon.”
