Less-Than-Truckload carrier Titan Freight Systems recently became the first trucking operation in Oregon to add Freightliner's eCascadia to its fleet. The three battery-electric Class 8 trucks will run delivery routes throughout the Portland Metropolitan area and will be joined by three Freightliner eM2 medium-duty electric box trucks serving downtown Portland later this year. Each new electric vehicle will replace an existing diesel truck.

    SMART Grants

In the spring of 2023, the Portland Bureau of Transportation received nearly $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants program to create a Zero-Emission Delivery Zone. The 16-square block area in downtown Portland will require deliveries to be emissions-free.

“These heavy-duty electric trucks are a natural evolution in our journey to be a carbon neutral transportation company,” says Titan Freight Systems President and CEO Keith Wilson. “We now have a new zero-emission, lower operating-cost tool to help us get closer to realizing our sustainability goals.”

    About The eCascadia

The eCascadia is powered by the all-electric Detroit ePowertrain, which provides 145 kilowatts (195 horsepower) with 11,500 pounds-foot (15,592 newton-meters) of torque with a single motor or 295 kW (395 HP) with 23,000 lbf-ft (31,183 N-m) of torque with dual motors. The truck features the same aerodynamic shape as its diesel counterpart and offers LED lighting and an optional impact-resistant TufGlass windshield. With dual-port charging, the eCascadia can charge from 0% to 80% in 90 minutes. Titan installed six Detroit eFill commercial charging stations at its depot to charge their trucks.

The eCascadia has a range somewhere between 155 and 230 miles, depending on the battery pack option selected. Titan’s eCascadias will run deliveries around the Portland Metropolitan area. (Photo courtesy of Daimler Truck North America.)

In the cab, drivers have an ergonomic seat, noise reduction technology, and a standard tilting and telescoping steering wheel with multifunction controls. A 2-screen digital dash is also standard. Drivers can customize LED-backlit switches to ease operation and assist in low-light situations.

The eCascadia is equipped with several safety features, including Active Lane Assist to reduce vibrations and keep the truck centered in its lane and Active Side Guard Assist to automatically stop the truck from completing a turn if a moving cyclist or pedestrian is detected. The truck’s side-impact protection panels are designed to absorb a collision and protect the high-voltage batteries from cracks or punctures in the event of an impact.
